The second generation of PCIe is commonly referred to as Gen 2. PCIe Gen2 doubles the transfer rate compared to Gen 1, bringing it to 5 GT/s. In all other aspects, PCIe Gen 2 is backward compatible to PCIe Gen 1, including line cards and motherboard and backplane slots.
